This study, entitled US Foreign Policy towards the Kurds in Iraq (1990-1961), the paper consists of three
main chapters. The first chapter discusses US policy against the Kurdish issue in Iraq from 1972-1961. The paper
argues that a number of factors caused the USA to shift from a noninterventionist approach to involving itself in
the Kurdish revolution during the Nixon administration. This study examines the USA’s foreign policy towards
the Iraqi Kurds as part of the Cold War battleground in Iraq and the Middle East between 1969 and 1975. The
paper argues that a number of factors led the USA to intervene in the Kurdish revolution during Richard Nixon’s
administration between January 1969 and June 1972. It will also analyses why Washington abandoned the
Kurds in March 1975. The final part will focus on the reflection of the Kurdish question in the US foreign policy
1990-1975, it describes Barzani’s efforts to convey the Kurdish question to the United States after the collapse
of September Revolution. The US policy towards the Kurdish issue during the 1988-1980 Iraq-Iran war was
considered as an internal Iraq crisis by the American authorities. Keywords: America, Kurds, Barzani, September
